Velomobiling Guide

The Velomobiling site Gallery features Velomobile Albums including Aerorider, Alligt Alleweder, Aurora, Berkut, Birk Butterfly, Cab-Bike, C-Alleweder, Flevo Alleweder (FAW), Go-one, Leiba, Leitra, Limit, Mango, Quest, Sunrider, Versatile, and WAW, with a miscellaneous album for limited-edition and home-built velomobiles, including La Fleche. "Building a Velomobile" showcases velomobile construction projects. Velomobile Circus celebrates wild and colorful velomobile designs.

The quick velomobile overview page is up again in English en in het nederlands.

They're still incomplete, but the Velomobile Comparison Tables are far enough along to mention here.

We've assembled some links to 2-person velomobiles, 2-wheel velomobiles, tandem recumbents, side-by-side and back-to-back tandem bikes and trikes. Whether you want two-person, two-wheel, multi-rider, or some other variation on the human-powered vehicle, we've tried to include it.

The original Velomobiling.net site will be closed down and merged with this site some time in 2007. (If that link brings you back here, it's already happened). We are creating archives of the articles and "blocks." Rethinking Transportation
In the U.S., cars have dominated our transportation system so thoroughly that it's become hard to imagine vehicle choices and infrastructure options that would free us from dependence on automobiles.  

Now, facing traffic congestion, oil shortages, limited parking, air pollution, and an epidemic of obesity and diabetes, we need to open our minds and roads to more efficient, healthier options.

Velomobiles are just one of many lower-impact alternatives.

Unfaired motorcycle Faired motorcycle Car When you think about transportation, do you imagine linear progress from walking to biking, to riding a scooter to driving a car? Or do you see a matrix of transportation options, in which you match your needs and capabilities to an appropriate vehicle? Frederik Van De Walle and Dr. Peter Cox have written about the effect of preconceived frameworks on acceptance of vehicle choices. Van De Walle's thesis is available online.

In this representation of the Transportation Matrix, vehicles are placed on a 2-dimensional grid, with more enclosure as you move from left to right, and more power as you go from bottom to top.  Rather than aspiring to the highest level we can achieve in "advancing" from feet to bike, to scooter or motorcycle and then to car, we can substitute a grid for the evolutionary image and select the amount of enclosure and power that suits our actual needs.

Redesigning Infrastructure
Gaps in infrastructure limit our transportation options.  If we can't get through just one intersection by bike, if there's no bike parking, if one bridge is for cars only, or if lighting or road surfaces are inadequate we drive when we could bike to work.

When traffic lights favor cars over pedestrians and cyclists, not allowing adequate time to cross the street, or requiring long waits for green lights to cross major roads, walking and cycling become more dangerous than they need to be.

Car-sharing reduces total car numbers while allowing individuals to drive for errands that can't be handled by mass transit or bike.  

First popularized in Europe, it is catching on in urban centers in the U.S.

Popular in Europe but unavailable in the U.S. are the 45 kilometer per hour (28 mph) tiny city cars, like this JDM Titane GLX and Canta.  (A links page in Dutch will find many photos of different models).  In the Netherlands, these can enter car-free zones. Turbo SmurfCanta in Amsterdam
